Chit Chat: Staying in Touch

Chit Chat: Staying in Touch Since graduating from college and getting a "real" job, it has been so hard to find the time to see my friends and to spend time with them like we use to. Staying in touch is very important to us because we are so close. I am really close with three girls that I have known for years, one of which I became friends with in middle school. Between the four of us we all work full time jobs with all of us having different schedules. Two of us who may have to work weekends and two of us who don't have to work weekends. And between the four of us we are working in four different cities in Kentucky. Our schedules, hectic lives, and the distance can make it hard to pencil in some best friend time.
I attended the same college as two of my best friends so we were always hanging out and running into each other on campus. I've lived in the same dorm building as them and have even roomed with one. It was a lot of fun being minutes away from going out to grab lunch with my friends or having an impromptu movie night (or tv Marathon in some cases). My other best friend I still saw on most weekends we came home.
Even though we may go a month without seeing each other face to face, we are still great at keeping in touch with one another. We call, we Facebook, we e-mail, and we send letters in the mail. Because of this, even if it has been a month or two, we still see each other and it is like no time has passed. Sometimes it is just great to hear the voice of a best friend coming from the phone and to have them to talk too even if we can't make it a face to face meet. Calling can be hard too, with our various schedules. Facebook is the easiest and fastest way for us to stay in touch. We are constantly messaging with updates, questions, and plans for our next get together. Even though we regularly communicate via the internet, I still love to send the occasional letter through the mail. I adore snail mail. When I come home from a hard day at work finding a letter in the mailbox from a friend instantly brightens my day. Just this past weekend, I sat down and made a few quick notes to my best friends to drop in the mail today. Hopefully, one day this week when they check their mail their day gets brightened by what they find! Just because it is harder to see each other now doesn't mean it's ok to just forget about each other. That is why staying in communication is so important. Are you still in touch with your high school and college best friends?

You've Got Mail

I have always loved to write. As a child I would make up stories and write them down. In elementary school my best friend and I would write letters to each other and send them through the mail. That is perhaps the first time I put my own letters in the mail box and received letters back. I would always look forward to receiving letters for my friend Samantha. We would always stick some kind of little gift a friendship bracelet or some stickers in the envelop too. Those times have sparked a love of letter writing and snail mail in me.
To this day I still get excited when I receive mail in the mail box other than bills and junk mail. That is one reason why I joined Post Crossing to send and receive post cards, because not only am I receiving mail I am learning about other countries. At the moment I have been searching for some beautiful stationery so that I can mail letters to me friends and family. I have bought several kinds of stationery and I am always on the look out for more. Do you have any suggestions for where I can look? Here are some of my current favorites.

To The Letter

One thing that I love to receive is mail. I am not talking about sale papers, magazines, catalogs, or any junk mail. I am talking about letters or cards from people that you care about. Personal mail from family and friends can brighten your mood no matter what. Receiving a handwritten letter just gives a person that warm and fuzzy feelings. Email is so impersonal with the typed font and it having to be seen on the computer screen. I think email is useful but it is a cheaper version of a REAL letter.
E-mail may be quick and easy but it just doesn't have the same impression that snail mail does. Snail mail shows the viewer that you care enough to take the time to send them something that they can hold onto. It also shows that you were really thinking about them before you sent them mail. You took the time to hand write them a message, you made sure you had stamps and envelopes, and then you dropped the letter in the mail box for the mail man to take.
I think that handwriting a letter is so much more personal than just sending an email. I find that when I am actually handwriting something I take time to think about what to write and what I want to say. In an email I want to be done quick and with the least amount of time possible, so I don't really say a lot. On a friend or family members birthday it is so easy to make them feel special my sending a letter or card with a handwritten note. I also think it makes them fill special when they open it and confetti and glitter falls out! Another thing that handwritten letters are better at than an email are love letters. By personalizing a handwritten love letter and adding those special touches you are making the person you are giving it to feel so special and adored. Think about all those love stories and movies you have seen where someone receives a beautifully written love letter. Can you imagine the impact it would have had as a love email?
I always get so excited when I open the mail box and see a REAL letter just waiting to be opened and read. Email is used so often and a person gets so many things in their inbox each day that it just is not special. Getting a REAL letter in the mail is rare, which makes it all the more special.
Don't you feel special when you receive a handwritten note from a family member, friend, or loved one?
