Chit Chat: Christmas Gifts

chit chat: christmas gifts
So I'm curious... Do you buy yourself a Christmas gift?

I do. I really cannot remember when this little yearly ritual started for me, but I am pretty certain that it was at some point while I was in college. I always buy clothes and shoes when I need them (okay also sometimes when I want them) but otherwise I do not make a lot of purchases. However, every year at Christmas time I treat myself to one or two items that I want not need. It is never anything extravagant but I pick out something pretty and fun that I would not typically otherwise purchase. Sometimes it is something that I have wanted for a long time.

For years my coworkers have teased me about my tradition but the other day I heard that 67% of people purchase themselves at least one gift during the holiday season. It seems I fall in the majority and now I am beginning to wonder if a few of my coworkers are just unwilling to admit they get themselves a gift at Christmas.

If you are planning on getting yourself a little something for the holidays but haven't done so yet make sure to check out our gift guides.

All I Want For Christmas

christmas gifts for girls
All I Want For Christmas
How is your Christmas shopping going? I finished up almost everything by Cyber Monday (even managed to pick up a couple things for myself). I have 1 more present left to purchase. I hope to pick it up soon so I can get all of my gifts wrapped, under the tree, and then forget all about the crazy busy stores until after the holidays.

Meanwhile, I have rounded a Christmas wish list of items I would not mind spotting under my tree come Christmas morning.

Frends BaubleBar Headphones // Because any girl who loves sparkle and music as much as me should own bejeweled headphones.

Evening Belles Lucinda Clutch // I have been swooning over this clutch for months. It just may be one of the prettiest things ever.

Erica Flats // I'm a flats kind of girl and foxes are just too adorable.

Ear Crawlers // They are a little edgy while still being very feminine.

Maise Keychain // A #stockingstuffer every girl would love.

Fame and Flowers Necklace // It is always fun adding new additions to my growing statement necklace collection. Plus, this one is rose gold.

Ginger Jar // Ginger Jars are stylish and sophisticated. While all colors are wonderful nothing beats classic blue and white.

Bow Slippers // For keeping my toes cute and warm this winter.

Journal // This journal is beautiful but if you are not a fan of A Midsummer Night's Dream there are four other pretty ones to choose from.

Leather Pouch // Scallops. Enough said.

Geode in Brass Caliper // The perfect desk, coffee table, or bookcase accessory.

Marine True Liquid Body Soap // A little luxury.

Burberry Nail Polish // Burberry polishes apply easy and dry fast which is very important if you have a hard time sitting still long enough for your polish to dry like me.

Myers Lemon Tree // Since I received my first cactus a few months ago I have developed a huge thing for live plants. This pretty little lemon tree might be somewhat harder to care for but it would be a beautiful addition to a home and the blooms would smell amazing.

Bow Leather Gloves // They are a chic cold weather necessity.

Patterned Socks // The cutest socks and only $7.

Charlotte Table Lamp // I love home decor statement pieces.

During the summer I feel like everyone is kind of doing their own thing, being always on the go, enjoying the sunshine, and doing a lot of traveling. It is in the fall that it seems like everyone starts to stick closer to home which of course leads to the bulk of hosting and attending get-togethers occurring during the fall and winter. I have always thought it is appropriate or at least a nice gesture to arrive parties, dinners, and lunches with a gift for the hostess.

I always hate running around town to locate a gift right before attending something, which I usually have no time to actually do so I have to try to squeeze it in and it results in me being stressed out. Instead now I keep a few little gifts stashed away in my closet so I am prepared for anything that pops up last minute. A few of my favorite gift ideas include pretty soaps, coffee table books, and pretty little things for around the house such as adorable mugs.

Boxes of chocolate also make perfects gifts. Chocolates from Esther Price are simply the best. I had always heard my mom rave about this candy. My dad used to buy it for her when they where first married but unfortunately it is not sold near where my family lives now. A couple years ago Jessica and I discovered it online and we have been ordering boxes of it for gifts (and massive amounts of it for ourselves too) ever since. Treat yourself to a box of this candy and you will begin to compare all other chocolates to it.

2 Easy Gift Wrapping Ideas

gift wrapping
2 Easy Gift Wrapping Ideas
In the past I was always the person running to the nearest store to quickly grab a gift bag and tissue paper to put gifts in moments before giving the gift to the recipient. Recently, however, I have really grown to appreciate pretty wrapped gifts. There is no doubt that receiving a gift that someone has taken a few minutes to wrap makes the present feel extra special no matter what is actually inside the wrapping.

gift wrapping ideas

For the pom pom wrapped gift all I did was wrap the present in craft paper and used the yarn to make a hot pink pom pom to top the gift. The method I used to make the pom pom is the same I used here.

To make the mini tassel all you need is washi tape, scissors, and baker's twine. Cut about 20 strips of washi tape that are 6 inches long and fold each strips in half lengthwise so that the sticky sides of the tape are together. Gather up your strips so they are all going the same direction and tie a small piece of string around the middle of the bundle. Gather up your strips so they are all going the same direction and tie a small piece of string around the middle of the bundle. Fold the bundle at the string and wrap one more small strip of washi tape around the top of the bundle to hold it in its folded position. Use the excess string from when you tied the bundle to attach it to the string on your gift.

Chit Chat: Made with Love

Chit Chat: Made with Love
When it comes to gift giving, I love to take a homemade approach. The gift could be for a birthday, Christmas, or a just because gift and I believe that homemade gifts work in all of these occasions. I like to be thoughtful in my gifts for others. Whether it is a homemade gift or a store-bought gift, I want the gift to be something the receiver will love. I want to get others gifts that they can enjoy and gifts that they will actually use. When purchasing for someone else, it doesn't matter what I think about the gift, what matters is what I believe the person I am buying for will think. Sometimes when searching for the right gift I think "I would love that, but ________ probably wouldn't use it." In those instances I know that the search has not ended yet.

I like to give homemade gifts because they are specially made for whoever I am gifting them too. Homemade gifts show you have put thought and care into planning and making the gift. I think these gifts show the gift receiver just how much you care for them, because not only did you devote your money for supplies to make their gift, you have also devoted your time into creating the gift. Homemade gifts usually require more time and effort than store-bought gifts. Not to say that store-bought gifts aren't special. I think as long as you find an item that the person will love and use then you have made the right chose.

I'm not the world's craftiest person or the homemade gift giving queen, but I have several skills that I fall back on when making homemade gifts. My family and I have always been known for our candy-making and baking abilities in our area. When making things for potluck dinners or community get-togethers we don't have to put much thought into what to make because we usually have people calling and requesting specific dishes. Requested most often is our Chocolate Fudge Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting and Chocolate Ganache or our Pumpkin Whoopie Pies with Maple Filling. So baking is usually an easy way to make a homemade gift for someone for us. These gifts are appreciated and loved. How do you feel when you receive a homemade gift?

I have also learned some about quilting and crocheting. One Christmas I crocheted almost everyone I know scarves for their gifts because I had just learned this skill. My dad still wears his to work on cold Winter mornings. Scarves are about all I can make when it comes to crocheting. I would love to learn more about this but don't have anyone to teach me. A little over a year ago I started attending a sewing/quilting group because my grandma had always loved quilting and had made everyone quilts and I wanted to learn this art. I'm not very fast at it and I do mess up frequently, but I enjoy quilting. I have only made a couple for gifts so far. I have to start plenty in advance to be able to finish these. I given my little sister a single wedding ring quilt that I made before she got married, I made a baby quilt for a good friend, and I have made a quilted throw for my great aunt and one for my grandma. Right now I have three quilts started and I want to finish them all so that they can be gifts for people later this year. I have the quilt top done for one, almost done for the second, and I'm just starting on third.

Tracy and I have started sharing DIY projects on Wednesdays a couple of times a month because we are trying to make more things for ourselves and for others. In these projects we have mainly focused on home decor items because everyone wants a beautiful home. My two favorites of our DIY projects has to be the Kate Spade Inspired Glittery Stud Earrings and the Glitter Jewelry Dish. Both are in the picture above. What do you think?

So this year I am going to try to make this the year of giving mostly homemade items or at least every gift I give will be accompanied with a homemade item. Do you give many homemade items? If so, what do you usually make?

Jessica and I shared gift guides in November but over the weekend I began thinking that we needed to point out more from some of the small businesses we love. Supporting small businesses is very important to use and when shopping small business you are more likely to purchase something unique like these personalized notebooks, amazing pillowcases, or this stunning chair that would be beautiful placed at a vanity table or in a home office.
